Based on my initial reader feedback from FUHAMMER, MS WORD did a less than ideal job of copy editing (verb tense, right spelling but wrong word, missing word, etc.). This was bit surprising to me since it had served me well at work for writing reports. But when a reader can find a significant number of errors, and I readily agreed once they were pointed out, there’s not much argument. I needed better copy editing.
I researched the problem and after considering a lot of options, I choose to buy a subscription to Grammarly. The quality of the product seemed unquestioned. Some reviewers felt it was expensive (about $140 / year). In the big picture of publishing, I don’t consider this unreasonable for something as critical as editing . . . so long as it does a good job at that.
Long story short, it found hundreds of errors of various degrees (some minor like comma placement or blank spaces, some more serious like the wrong word, verb tense, etc.). And it made thousands (no exaggeration) of suggestions to improve the readability.
My assessment is that made all of the changes for the errors it found and roughly 98% of the suggestions. Afterwards, no paragraph was left untouched.
Yet, as good as it was, I still found a few errors in each chapter by doing a verbal reading of the chapter to one of my beta readers. Chapter-by-chapter, this error rate persisted after Grammarly gave the text the “thumbs up.”
And Grammarly had a few irritating features and behaviors (and makes some outright errors too).
One big limitation is that it is cloud based. No internet connectivity = no Grammarly.
Also, Grammarly will try to enforce varying words for repeated descriptions. For example, use “door” too many times and it will suggest “portal,” “passage,” “gate,” etc.). But if you are describing a “truck,” it will suggest “car” and repeatedly do so if you insist that truck in not a car. Sometimes, the suggestions aren’t even correct substitutions for the word you used. This seems to be the most common outright error Grammarly makes.
But overall, it’s a great way to eliminate most outright errors and improve readability. My beta readers reported vast improvement.
So, what is FUHAMMER Reedited? It is FUHAMMER after being blessed by Grammarly and passing on verbal reading to a Beta Tester.
Initially, I listed it separately on AMAZON. After getting favorable reviews from my readers, I altered the original FUHAMMER text to match the FUHAMMER Reedited text.
I wanted to remove FUHAMMER Reedited from AMAZON to avoid any confusion for buyers. But removing a book from AMAZON is not simple . . . but that’s another story.
