Book two of the series is Demon’s Postern (Is it really even a series until book two?). Anyway, Demon’s Postern picks up precisely where FUHAMMER left off and has gone through the advanced copy editing (Grammarly followed by verbal reading to a beta tester).
The story flows along to the end of the book where it will pick up seamlessly in book three.
I focused in book two on expanding some of the people, places, and ideas that were introduced in book one. I think that it’s inherent that the first book of series is tasked with laying down a lot of the foundation for the series. This is obviously a critical function. But it also limits how much any one thing can be detailed or expanded. In theory, book two (and on) are much more able to build on topics since they already have that foundation.
I’ve been asked if book two could be read without first reading FUHAMMER. Of course, it can be. I think the question is really about how much would be lost in doing so. I think I did a pretty good job summarizing the basic element and discoveries of the first book at the start of Demon’s Postern. But I do think it would be a bit of a battle to get up to speed if the reader hasn’t read the first book. Hopefully, the reader wouldn’t be completely lost. I know I’m biased to sell books, but my best advice is to read all the series books in order.
The biggest challenge to publishing Demon’s Postern was actually coming up with the title. The idea I wanted to capture was “a doorway used by the demon” encountered in book one. I’m a firm believer that a book should have a unique title. In the past, I’ve been confused by books of the same title that have nothing to do with each other. I have the same belief regarding movie and TV series titles. I think this is becoming more important as we become a society built around search engines and web pages.
I considered a number of titles early on “Demon’s Door,” “Demon Gate,” “Gateway of the Demon,” etc. They all produced “hits” on someone else’s work. I stumbled on “Postern” while searching an online Thesaurus. Honestly, I didn’t know what that was and had to “Google” it. Its definition was perfect, and “Demon’s Postern” produced no direct hits.
A special consideration for this book was that I needed help with the cover text. My youngest daughter took a small break from her college studies to give me that help.
